Improvised incendiary devices (IID) pose a serious threat to aviation security. These homemade devices, specifically designed to ignite fires, can be concealed in luggage and even more so in freight or postal shipments. Due to their composition and the advanced concealment methods used, their detection is particularly challenging for security personnel without specialized training. Last summer, as is now publicly acknowledged, several shipments containing such devices successfully entered European territory. This situation prompted a reassessment of threat levels and risks, underlining the extent to which air cargo remains a target and a critical vulnerability in the transportation sector regarding unlawful interference.

Composition and Detection of IID

Similar to certain explosive devices, the primary concern surrounding incendiary devices lies in the ease of access to their components. Whether purchased online or in stores, IID are often made from commonly available materials, thus significantly raising their risk level. While their exact composition can vary, they typically include flammable substances or reactive chemical agents. Furthermore, these devices can be hidden within everyday objects, complicating their detection unless adequate training is provided.

Effective detection of IID relies heavily on specialized equipment and well-trained security staff. Unsurprisingly, detection equipment such as conventional X-ray imaging systems and Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) enable trained operators to identify these threats, thereby substantially reducing the associated risks.

Training Initiatives Developed by LOGYX

Recognizing the critical importance of specialized training in this field, LOGYX has developed two dedicated training programs aimed at enhancing understanding and detection capabilities related to IID:

  • Theoretical and Practical Workshop: This program combines comprehensive theoretical sessions with practical exercises, offering participants a complete understanding of IID characteristics and detection methods.
  • Awareness Training: Available either in-person or online, this training course is specifically designed for operators responsible for implementing security measures, equipping them with essential knowledge to identify and manage threats related to IID.

The Importance of Continuous Training and Practical Exercises

Beyond theoretical knowledge, LOGYX emphasizes practical training through its solution, LOGYX DETECT, which incorporates realistic images from field. Unlike traditional images involving Molotov cocktails or fireworks, LOGYX integrates 2D and 3D imagery closely resembling situations similar to those experienced in European cargo shipments last summer. This practical approach ensures security operators maintain a high level of readiness and effectively addresses current and evolving threats.
